Cape Town

Arrived Cape Town Friday morning after 11 hour flight feeling surprisingly energetic. The airport systems were smooth and consequently we soon gathered as a group ( of 19) and headed off to Cape  Town Hollow hotel, with views of the Lion's head mountain, Table Mountain  and opposite the Company Gardens, the botanical gardens.

The city has a growing city centre with a lot of building happening and some housing projects bring constructed on environmental lines, although some poor shanty type housing was visible too.

We saw flamingos along the river and birds, fliers and snakes were promised for the holiday! We had a little drive around with views of Table Mountain, Cape Castle  and various museums.
On arrival, as our accommodation was not ready I headed straight into the botanical gardens for a lunch if winter vegetable salad and red capucciono a rooibis cappuccino. I must find out how it's made as I could get hooked! All was very reasonably priced.  As there was time, I visited the Slavery museum. That wasn't such cheerful information, but it was an interesting museum giving me some historical background.

Later in the afternoon we were taken around the gardens by a localmguide Edgar. He told the history if the Company Gardens, which originated as a garden for the East India Company,  providing essential food and water to ships en route between East and West. The gardens contain many ancient trees that were planted as a result of the passage if ships and so are samples from many different countries.  The properties now house the government.

In the evening a meal and show had been organised as an ice breaker. I'm not keen on these so called cultural shows but the food was excellent and the entertainers were a group of local youngsters who got everyone playing African drums. The meal was a sample menu with dishes of many local foods. It más a sociable evening but we were all glad to get back after an overnight flight and a long day and evening.
